On Wednesday morning, Photronics (NASDAQ: PLAB) investors got a jolt of good news: fiscal Q3 2026 earnings beat expectations across the board, and the stock opened 27.1% higher. But the $37.26 joy didn't last; share prices cooled down to a 4% gain just 20 minutes later.

The numbers that sparked Photronics' rally were genuinely good. Revenue of $216.0 million topped the $208.8 million analysts were modeling, and adjusted earnings of $0.50 per share blew past the $0.40 consensus.

But the short-lived celebration makes sense on a closer examination. Earnings fell slightly year-over-year, while revenue increased by only 2.7%. The midpoint of management's fourth-quarter revenue guidance is merely 1% above the year-ago period's $215.8 million. The high end of the bottom-line range stops at $0.56 per share, down from $0.60 per share in Q4 2025.
