Rocket Lab Shares Surge: What's Driving the Rally
Rocket Lab is turning space-industry momentum into a compelling growth story.
Overview
Rocket Lab's (NASDAQ: RKLB) stock has been on a tear again in early August, riding a wave of enthusiasm that started with a blowout first quarter, and it seems to now be fueled by another strong report in the second quarter. For a company that is still considered an upstart in space, the numbers behind this rally look increasingly like those of a serious player.

The groundwork for the current surge started in May, when Rocket Lab reported record first quarter 2026 revenue of $200.3 million, up 63.5 percent year over year and slightly above the high end of its own guidance. The gross margin, based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), hit 38.2%, a big improvement for a launch business that used to bleed cash on each flight. At the same time, the company's contracted backlog jumped to about $2.2 billion, up 108% from a year earlier and 20% just since the prior quarter.
